“Why don’t you go on and tell me all about yourself so I can see you with my heart.”
Gloria Dump, an elderly and almost blind character in the movie, Because of Winn-Dixie, makes this seemingly simple, yet heartwarming request of 10-year-old Opal. Just moments before, Opal has chased her runaway dog, Winn-Dixie, down Gloria’s long driveway, around a corner and nearly collides with Gloria.
After all these years I have easily forgotten the rest of the story but what I do remember is the kindness and generosity in this one request, ‘Why don’t you go on and tell me all about yourself so I can see you with my heart.” It’s a beautiful image.
We all love a good story, a worthy read, a book so well written that it has the capacity to shape our hearts with powerful and lingering images. New to The Wrinkled Egg this year is a wonderful selection of good fiction in addition to books about the area and a collection of titles by several local authors.
